Richard Branson launched Virgin Atlantic Airways in 1984 as a high quality value for money airline with its head office in Crawley, England. In late June, it operated its inaugral scheduled service between Gatwick and Newark. In 1992, Richard Branson sold Virgin Music to Thorn EMI and invested the proceeds into Virgin Atlantic, which launched its first super economy service that become its award winning Premium Economy Class.
During 2003, the airline carried 3.8 million passangers while in 2006 the figure rised to 4.6 million. In 2008, Virgin Atlantic operated World’s First Biofuel Flight from Heathrow to Amsterdam.
The airline along with Virgin Holidays is controlled by Virgin Atlantic Limited, which 51% owned by the Virgin Group and 49% by Delta Airlines.
In 2016, Virgin Atlantic introduced live TV in-flight entertainment, allowing passengers to tune to live TV via the seat back screen or uses their own devices with onboard Wi-Fi at no extra cost.
In March 2018, Virgin Atlantic launched new Economy services with three care options- Economy light, economy Classic and Economy Delight. Economy Delight is the best product of any UK airline that offers extra legroom seats with 34′ seat pitch, advanced seat assignment, priority check-in and boarding. Economy Classic offers free seat assignment and Economy light offers lowest fare with hand luggage only.
Virgin Atlantic expanded service over the following years, mostly around its west coast hubs at San Francisco and Los Angeles. It also established smaller hubs in Dallas at Dallas Love Field airport. It mainly flew domestic services but also operated to Toronto, Canada for a short while in 2010 and 2011 and to several leisure destinations in Mexico.
